Dr Lindsey Waterton Taylor, Lecturer in Weaving Technologies and Design, Academic lead for the 3D Weaving Innovation Centre (3D WIC) in the School of Design at the University of Leeds .

The School of Design at the University of Leeds launched the Weaving Innovation Centre in 2018 with £1.7m support by the European Regional Development fund. It focuses on helping SMEs in the Leeds city region enhance their weaving expertise. The Centre operates a new state of the art jacquard MAGEBA multi-shuttle loom (with four shuttles, instead of the usual one), coupled to a computer-controlled Staubli Unival harness, providing the technological platform to design and produce innovative, seamless multi-layer fabric structures.

Dr Taylor will discuss the design and production of 2D-3D woven engineered outer surface and internal structural forms .

With huge potential to produce more durable and resilient structures, 3D weaving is increasingly popular in industries from aerospace to medical technology. It provides fantastic opportunities for the fashion and textile industry, from technical textiles to producing seamless garments.
