Dr Mark Nesbitt explores the diversity of plant fibres and textiles held at Kew Gardens in its useful plant collections, ranging from Jamaican lacebark to milkweed, and questions how such historic specimens could be useful to researchers, designers and the textile industry today?
Working at Kew since 1999, Dr Nesbitt has focused on the sustainable uses of plants as Scientific Officer, and since 2015 he has been part of Kew’s Science Directorate, overseeing Kew’s Economic Botany Collection and research. A renowned expert in archaeobotany and agricultural botany, his wide ranging career in ethnobotany, includes the global patterns of fibre plants.
