The Textile Institute Launches the Fabric Knowledge course!

What will I learn about?

At the end of the course you will…

  • Appreciate that there is a huge variety of natural and manufactured fibres available for inclusion in fabrics, together with a knowledge of some important fibre properties.
  • Recognise basic yarn structures.
  • Be able to distinguish between woven, knitted, and nonwoven structures.
  • Understand the need for manufacturers to fully consider the choice of fibre content, yarn and fabric construction for specific end-uses.
  • Have a basic understanding of the processes available for introducing colour and pattern into fabric to enhance the saleability of textile products.
  • Have a basic understanding of some finishing processes available to enhance fabric end-use potential.

Overview of Fabric Knowledge

The taught element of this course will include a significant amount of ‘hands-on’ practical work allowing delegates to leave with a good understanding of fabric construction, characteristics, and end-use potential.

Who is this course suitable for?

The course is suitable for anyone who works with or needs an understanding of fabrics in their professional life. Although predominantly geared towards apparel and fashion accessory end uses, it also benefits those involved in other applications e.g. protective workwear or household textiles. Designers, product developers, garment technologists, manufacturers, and fashion buyers all profit from understanding of the fundamentals of fabrics.

Length of Course

You will be asked to prepare for the course by dedicating approximately 2 hours to pre-course activities. Then, you will immerse yourself in the absorbing one-day taught course, offering 6-7 hours of intensive study. Location details will be provided upon registration.
